On April 30th I bid on a 1878 8 tail feather Morgan dollar. I was the only bidder and won the auction with the opening bid of $100. In the original sellers photos, the scratches I saw on her cheek appeared to me to be on the plastic case and not the coin, and I was correct. Did that stop others from bidding? I don't think so. I believe it was the opening bid of $100 that stopped others from bidding. People love to win auctions, and bidding and winning an auction is more important than the final price. That's what this post is about.

Over the next week I followed other 1878 8TF Morgans to see what the final winning bids were and it was an eye opener to me, how people love to bid and win at all costs. This first coin, the one right below is the one I won for my $100 opening bid. the next 5 were all sold the same week with each getting at least 29 bids or more.

A correct 'read' on the 'scratches.'
And a fortunate purchase for you.

People can be nuts when it comes to getting caught up in an auction. The "I gotta win at all costs" mentality can be brutal on the ol' bank account!

You did very well. Congrats!

Don't discount a return policy(yours + one other had no returns) playing a factor either but you got yourself a nice coin.

Also remember that not all 8TF's are equal, you always need to look at VAM's as there are some rare ones out there, I believe yours is VAM 14.1A. Nice purchase though.
