Hi all , here is a 83S I am looking at both regular pics and pics from NGC graded as AU55 I love the toning . Just wondering what everyone thinks. looks like a strong 55 to me but it has a few rust colored spots on the reverse , Not sure if it would of been a 58 had they not been there.

Looks like at the time of minting your coin had a good shot as to being "proof like" however now with all the scratches in/on the field..AU55 (imo) is correct

Edited: but I'm no pro,so will love to see what others think/say

Nice coin!

The 83-S coins may have suffered the same fate as the 84-S coins in that they look like they were released for circulation and then suddenly recalled after seeing a few days of circulation and then bagged back up.

Seen a lot of 83 and 84 S coins in nice AU condition over the years. Both of your coins fit in that group!

I wouldn't be ashamed to own either one of them!

thanks all. I wish I had the budget to buy the harder ones in MS63 or higher but I have to do that with the commons :)

Nice-looking example for the grade.

Might be a bit undergraded, looks like a borderline prooflike coin that had an unfortunate spot in the bag and got nicked up and abraded quite a bit. But I don't think it circulated. So I'll say MS-60.

I think it's MS too, don't really see any wear on the high points. MS-61 IMO

Pretty nice coin, with "busy" surfaces with lots of small contact marks. I see definite friction and luster loss in the obverse fields but no significant high point wear. So, a straight AU-58 seems correct.

I see just enough wear on the cap, cap fold, large bear claw, and hair above the forehead for an AU-55 obverse grade. The reverse looks like a solid AU-58. I can understand NGC's technical grade on this one.

Your coin has much better eye appeal than most AUs for the date. I think it would trade above a 55 price because of the eye appeal. It will look good in a collection.
