For those that do, do you consider the type 2 reverse varieties as an integral part of your collection? I just discovered what this meant and found a few in my collection that were in with the regular issues.

they are a minor type, so not a necessity. however, coin collecting is an OCD magnet so I bet a lot of collectors who know about the unpopular variety would enjoy having them too. in fact, I am one of those collectors :)

Lol...understandable. Are they even listed in the Red Book?

I collect Franklins but I have not been concerned with the Type 2 reverses. I need one more to complete my Dansco and once that is complete, I may try to get some Type 2s as well. RedBook does not list them but the monthly price guide from Numismatic News, Coin Market, has them listed.

I have almost a full collection of Franklin halves. I generally go for nice condition but do not have a BU set. My friend has a BU set that is really nice. I go for the regular dates (don't include any Type 2 coins). Half dollars are one of the best types of coins to collect. I have every half dollar from 1940 to 2008 (not counting any error coins like the 1955).

I love Franklin's and have a complete B.U. set, MS64+. I also have all the proofs. My non proofs are all in a Dansco but all my proofs are in PCGS, NGC and ANAC tombs. I only have one Cameo proof. As I always say, Franklin's will be worth good money in the future. Look at some of the mintage's vs prices. Still highly affordable and a fun set to complete. I still search for upgrades and never have any problem selling my duplicates. Mike

I always find myself drawn back to this coin, and workin gon this set. Currently I have about 14 cions to go. I am putting together a BU set with Proofs for the P issues. I am cracking them all out and putting them in my Dansco. Yes, chris1222 - I too think that the half dollars are the most fun to collect.

I will see if I can take some decent pictures.

I'm 3 coins short of completing my BU franklin set and I didn' bother with the varieties since intercept albums doesn't have a slot for them.

I have a complete set in a Dansco; no proofs, Type II, or other varieties. It is one of my favourite sets to look at.

Can someone educate me on the Type 2 and what to look for? I never knew about this. I love Franklin half dollars and finally completed a BU set after many years.

I collect both MS and PR of the series .
Im few coins short of both for complete sets , but every now and then I circulate back around to them and add a coin or two so eventually they will both be complete sets .

Good info Metalman...that's where I learned about the differences. For those who decide to look for type 2 coins, you will know when you see one. The eagle really jumps off the coin and once you see your first one, they will be pretty easy to spot.

I have a BU/Proof set complete in a Dansco album. I did not worry about the minor differences in the reverses or other variations as there isn't a hole for them in the Dansco anyway. High grade Franklins have lots of room for upward appreciation in value IMHO.
