I am looking at a 1899P Morgan dollar that looks artificially toned to me(rainbow)—my question is it worth buying and trying to remove the toning(acetone or ms80)—you cant tell details from the to ing like cleaned or not but to me I would rather have a cleaned coin than an artificial toned one—i certainly am not going to pay high premium for this coin —thoughts?—thanks
If you dip it to remove the toning, you'll be left with an overdipped coin without original surfaces. So I don't see any advantage over just buying a cleaned coin to start with, especially if you're paying any premium for the rainbow toning.
I would not waste any time or money on a coin like this.
If you strip off the horrific toning you'll most likely find no luster remains and all you'll have is a dull and lifeless coin.
I remember seeing stuff like this back about 20 years ago at coin shows in Utah. Don't know what ever happened to the guy that was making them and selling them. I remember though he had a showcase full of them!
This looks like an XF/AU coin under all that ugly toning, and it will always be a details coin. There are lots of problem-free XF coins of that date, and it definitely would not be worth trying to salvage this one.
