Was wondering what is happening on this coin. I see a few die cracks but the letters look damaged. Is it a build up of dirt thru out the years or something else.

Any info appreciated

Thank you,

Ray

All I can think of is die erosion and die chips.

dragon slayers are some of the finest made tokens/coins in all of Canada's history, these never circulated suffering from extensive die chips or Die Deterioration.

That looks like "Vicky gunk". It can be removed. Do a search on cleaning techniques for various methods.

Some dirt.

Otherwise, it's the variety Courteau #128. From my book on this subject:

I think most of it is gunk/dirt/whatever on the token. Some of it appears interesting-but it really looks like
dirt or something on the token, not corrosion, slightly different colour, different layers in some places.
