HI FOLKS. My handle is numisnut1960. Happy to be here. I've been collecting for several decades, not saying how many. I collect what makes me happy. There isn't really any particular type.

Now that we've dispensed with the pleasantries, I'd like to ask a couple of questions.

I'd like to know if anyone has any idea about what the effect, if any, the covid lockdown will have on circulation mintage numbers at the Canadian mint. Also I wonder if anyone has found any 2020 stuff in circulation yet? Thanks

Welcome! I don't have an answer on the mintage question. However, I think Covid will have a very measurable negative impact on the use of coins in Canada going forward. I suspect mintages in 2021/2022/2023 will be down 50% from recent years--maybe more.

Or the RCM already has a warehouse full of 2020 and next year will be the lower mintage or no mintage of some coins

My guess is - based on similar historic instances due to strikes / commems / etc - is that although there was a brief closure of the mint in 2020, they will work overtime to meet their quota by the end of the year. Remember, they a re a crown corporation which is contracted to strike a certain dollar amount of coin per year - it is in their best interests to meet that total and maximise profit. This being said, as was implied above, in the coming years, without a clear solution to COVID-19, the use of physical money will suffer, and likely lead to 'knock-on' low mintages. This might take years to happen, and as a result, the 'curve' of demand might mean no perceptible impact on number of coins produced.

Welcome to the forum!
I agree with norantyki's comment about about circulation coinage.
In the past few weeks I have been monitoring the bullion coinage situation in Canada. Most large retailers are sold out of bullion products (gold, silver, and platinum). In mid-March, a local retailer was paying slightly below spot for silver bars, but now they are paying 10-20% above spot. My understanding is that this has to do with the supply chain. The mint in Winnipeg is closed, and a lot of bullion is on back-order.
Sooner or later the mint would have to fill these back-orders. Given the large demand for bullion recently, the mintage for 2020 bullion products may even incre ASE

I have been thinking about circulation coin mintages. I think 2020 and 2021 will be impacted. Perhaps 2021 more so as the mint may have already stockpiled a large amount of 2020 before COVID hit. They base mintages off of demand, so obviously demand has fallen. I, like many people, haven't used coins or bills in a couple of months. Many places aren't even taking them right now.

welcome 1960

as far as mintage volume due to contagion, I am not sure that it will have the desired effect as some might expect.

if mintages of say 2021 twoonies drops from 200,000,000 to 2 million will they (2021 $2) be worth "investing in"?

honestly I think not, or at least a good return on investment won't be seen in our generation. why? because every collector out there will hoard as many mint state rolls as they can.

a foreseeable drop in mintages will result in hoarding to the point that MS coins will still out number collectors, rendering them "not so valuable".

now, an unforeseeable drop in available volume (like the 2012 non-security $1 & $2) is a completely different animal. but hey, if only we could see the unforeseeable (ie, apple stocks @ $1.48)

interesting times ahead for sure, not only for the future of hard (contaminated) cash, but also the world in general.

BE SAFE ALL
