I came across this 1957 today. I'm 99% it's just wear, but had to consult with the experts first! Obverse Reverse Thanks! BD Edited by sublime118 11/08/2008 3:31 pm

I'm curious exactly how much it weighs. Do you have a gram scale?
I bet it was somebody's lucky pocket coin for a looong time.

Sander to me. The rim is missing too much to be just wear. I think it had some help.

That was my thoughts too. It's smooth though, that's what threw me off

This is more than just wear. It was meant for something .

It's wear. I lean toward the "pocket piece" idea.
Thanks, Bill

It would be nice to get an accurate weight before I sign off on the consensus.

Hi,
I just don't think that weight matters much. Having this much wear would cause the piece to be underweight.
Thanks, Bill

The reason I feel it is not a pocket piece is that the obverse on the lower bust area still contains a portion of the rim and part of the design in that area. A pocket piece would look like the reverse with all areas of the coin worn equally. Thus I feel it had some help to look that way.

Hi,
Not necessarily, some pocket pieces are "thumbed" by the holder, sometimes as a good luck piece or for some, like a "worry bead" .
One side wears more than the other and the wear can be pretty uneven, overall.
Please:-) Don't make me dig one out but I have at least one that is worn the same way:-) It would truly be a needle in a haystack search for me to dig it out and take a picture of it.
I am merely trying to point out that the coin is worn and the pattern of wear, in this case doesn't really indicate much.
Thanks, Bill

I agree with Bill. It's wear, and that's all it can be. Exactly "how" the wear got there is anybody's guess, but the pocket piece idea sounds most plausible.
And I also agree that weight doesn't matter at all.
