Willing to try this one? I can say that there is more of a luster showing than the pics might indicate. Also, the lines by the stars and date are from die cracks, not scratches. That being said....Thanks for your input.

fmtaxguy,

That is a beautiful half dollar and is a minimum XF45. From your photos there seems to be just a bit too much wear for AU. You should probably also assume that at one time or another this coin was cleaned in some fashion ... nearly all of them were unfortunately. The die breaks and forming rim Cuds at 11 and 12 0'clock on the reverse really add character. I wish I had that one in my collection. Nice!

This is a really nice coin, I think it would grade AU-55.

Quite the early spread, so far. Since I am new to collecting and grading, I figured it was somewhere in that range. My hopes giveth a higher a grade, and my adherence to the books taketh away. I look forward to seeing how this shakes out when the upstate votes are in.

I like this coin and think it deserves a solid AU-50 grade. There appear to be hints of luster clinging to the obverse stars and reverse letters and all details are sharp. The star radials are complete and head detail is strong. The left (facing) eagle talons are a bit flat but I think that's from strike, not wear. All feather detail is complete. The color looks reasonably original and I don't see hairlines or other evidence of abuse.

If the luster were stronger it could grade a notch higher IMO. It's a very nice example with good eye appeal.

fmtaxguy, That is a beautiful piece of history that is very pleasing to the eye.I too wish I had this coin for my collection, I have the next year 1854, I like the " rays" on the rev, the obv with the die breaks, well that is just some more fruit for the view, I love the effect a good die break gives a coin!! NICE FIND!!

I really had trouble finding any wear on it, except mayyyyybe in some of the fine areas of the reverse and on the shield lines. So if that's the case, AU-58, but if it's just strike, then it could grade MS, probably 63 or better because of the relatively clean surfaces. I've seen coins like this slabbed MS.

I'd give it a high Au grade, maybe 55 or 58.
You don't run across coins this nice every day.
