Is it worth keeping Zincolns with gas bubbles/Zinc rot?
Would these just be worth face or do these have any numismatic value?

There is zero reason to save cents with zinc rot. They are spenders!

It's barely worth keeping any zincoins just spend them unless high grade mint state.

I would think that it would have to be a major error for a coin showing zinc rot to have any numismatic value.
Otherwise, spend it while you can... they'll eventually rot away to nothing.

If I found a split planchet with zinc rot I'd keep it (and find a way to try to neutralize the rot).

@merclover, ok yes perhaps, but I read @jtl's question as asking if saving coins with zinc rot as their defining feature was worthwhile.

I totally agree with all the above. They're barely worth keeping in mint state!

As always in coin collecting, if you like it, keep it.

Depends on the zincoln really. If it's corroded probably not, but if it's some blisters or exposed zinc, sure. Without air getting to the zinc it won't get crusty and turn white with zinc oxide.

Even if it does the zinc oxide can be knocked off from circulation and just that exposed to area gets sacrificed.

Think of it like a cut or wound. Exposed to air it will form a scab to cover the wound and protect underneath. Zinc does the same thing and any exposed zinc to air will for zinc oxide to protect the rest of the zinc that's exposed.

Just saying it's not a death sentence for a coin unless it's circulating a lot, where the oxide keeps getting knocked off and reforming getting bigger over and over. I have a 2005 zincoln with a ton of split plating on the reverse around lettering and memorial and it looks like the day it was pulled from the new roll still, just sitting in its 2x2.

If it's crusty and too far gone, let it go, but if it's minor, you can keep it protected and it will last near forever still. Once the exposed zinc forms a thin layer of zinc oxide it's done sacrificing some zinc to protect the exposure.. until the zinc oxide gets knocked rubbed or washed off again. It's why they don't last in circulation.

Rest in Peace
