I found this blank plnchet in a roll of pennies. The coins were all older coins that were still in excellent condition. Anyways, I put this blank penny on the scales and it weighed...4.1 grams!! I have double and triple checked and get the same thing. Anyone have any ideas what I am looking at?

I took pics of a regular nickel and a regular 1958 penny to show my scales are close to right.

I just looked at the edge of this blank and it almost looks like 2 coins put together or something.....but you cant see it without magnification. Maybe its just the way they look before they are finished on the edge.

Anyone have an idea what this is and what it's worth?

If it is underweight that much and is a copper planchet, it was probably altered by removing the devices. It is missing the upset rim (Proto-Rim) which also tells me the coin was altered by removing surface. So the diameter is probably normal and the thickness is reduced if it was an altered cent.

Might be a "type" of "knock out" like from an electrical box?

@Coop, it is overweight.

How do you know that it is a blank US one cent coin? I would argue that the weight proves that it is not a US coin blank.

People put all sorts of things in coin rolls-which I have noticed in the roll hunting forums.

I cannot see any evidence of it being converted from a blank into a planchet.

Thus, it could be a copper or bronze blank disk for anything.

Well a side by side with a normal coin would have showed me that. Sorry.

what about the experimental cents of 1944 ... I think they weighed 4.1.. could it have something to do with them? The other coins in the roll were 1960 and earlier

There is no proof it is even a blank US cent. It could be anything and worth only it's weight in copper.

It is a copper slug. All we can say is that it is a piece of copper alloy of uncertain composition roughly 19mm in diameter and 4.1 grams in weight.

We have no idea who created it, or what it was intended for. We don't know if this was a step to in turning this into a finished product (such as a token or piece of jewelry), or if this was the waste material in the creation of something else (waste from something of copper that needed a hole punched in it.)

So unless a XRF test shows it is some exotic proprietary alloy only used by a certain firm, all you can say is it is a copper slug.

I don't believe its a planchet. One side is polished and the other side is too flat and ground down. Could be anything

Kloccwork419,
Getting close to contest time? In the 18th photo it looks like a coating of some sort on the disk?

I found this exact specimen in a roll today, so whatever it is, there is more than one of them out there.
