Classification Of Full Step Jefferson Nickels

Grandpasam New Member United States 1 Posts	Posted 07/07/2020 10:23 am Hello fellow members. At 71 I just started collecting Jefferson nickels and just joined the forum. My reading has left me confused. I see pictures of 6 step nickels online but only count 5 steps. I was told that the actual 6th step is the platform that the columns rest upon. He called it a stylobate. The same for 5FS Jeffersons. Only 4 steps show. Please provide some insight Thanks GrandpaSam Report this Post to the Staff

Just a little tip which you probably already know , make sure you have a good magnifying glass or better yet a good loupe to look for Full Step Jefferson's . coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 07/07/2020 1:56 pm I figured out what they are doing on these, but have no interest in them. When you look at the PCGS images of the slabbed examples, I couldn't see what they were grading on. So spent some times and figured out they are looking at the risers and not the steps: So after I figured it out, it was no big deal to me. The wisdom of this forum says to buy the coin and not the slab - so post and ask when you have a question. Also - and not meaning to hijack the thread. But since you said you are new to nickels, and if you are interested in varieties, you will run into the 1938 and 1939 REV varieties. Unfortunately the "experts" at the grading companies seem not to be aware of the easiest way to tell these apart - but the following chart makes it easy.
