Recently I've been looking at buying one of my dream coins. I've always wanted a double Eagle and I think the time has come. Though my budget is tight and I will most likely sell my $5 Indian that I picked up a few years ago to help me cover the cost. I have some questions that I hope y'all could help me figure out Saint Gauden or Liberty Head? - I want to get the Gauden because it's so well known and one of the most beautiful coins ever made. Though I have a soft spot for the Liberty head. I only have the funds for 1, so if you could only pick one which would it be? Years? - I'm not particular about the year of either the Gauden or Liberty. I just want to own one of them. The only thing I really care about is it to be MS with a good amount of luster, and graded by PCGS or NGC. I'm trying to save as much as I can, so which years are typically the cheapest of the two? Best Place to Buy? - I've been looking at ebay, though I don't know if there are better places to buy from, such as coin shows.

Common date slab Saint Gauden or Liberty Head in low MS grade will be over 2 grands plus tax, if you go to a coin show you may avoid paying tax? Depending which state you lived. I like both, so either one or the other, or wait till prices goes down, but we're on a bull trend at the moment, it maybe a longer wait.

Opinion Warning: It depends on how picky you are. If you're gonna go Liberty Head buy no less than a 65 or you're gonna regret it, Lib Heads are really good at showing marks.
Saints hide their marks a lot better which is nice, but have more muted luster, especially when compared to some Liberty Heads.
Personally, I'd never touch a saint. They are a neat design and all sure, but the muted luster and often soft central strikes are a no for me. If I was gonna buy one it'd probably be a modern gold eagle ($50).

I prefer early S (pre 1870) or CC as old west history, without regard to wear. APMEX used to have a fair amount in the lower price range, but are pretty picked over now. They'd be a better choice than ebay for raw coins.

If it goes back down... I'd buy it now.

Best advice is to buy a coin you love. There are tens of thousands of certified double eagles to choose from.
If you want a certified MS65 coin there are only a handful of Liberty double eagle dates that sell for less than $2500. Many more dates in the Saint Gaudens series sell in that price range in gem grade.
I prefer the Liberty design and PCGS holders but that's just me.
Good luck on your quest!

I bought my first last year, when gold was around $1400 a ounce. I only wish I'd gotten in a few years back. If you can attend a local coin show, many dealers are selling around melt, without the premiums. Good luck!

I prefer the St Gauden's. I've bid on a lot over the years but never managed to get one. Kicking myself for not bidding a little higher when gold was at $1300. There are plenty of years that go for slightly over melt. Just check the PCGS or NCS price guide. If your state doesn't tax coins, then you shouldn't have to worry about that. Even online. Sights like ebay take that into account.

The most common dates for each are 1904 (Liberty) and 1924 (Saints). Both can be had in MS for not too much more than spot.
For common date Liberties the prices go up from just above melt starting at MS63/64
For common date Saints the prices go up from just above melt starting at MS64/65.

When I had the funds to do this back in August of 2018, I went with a 1922 P $20 Saint Gaudens PCGS MS62 coin.

Pick what you like but slabbed coins will not cost much more than raw ones so at least buy NGC/PCGS slabbed. Liberties typically are a bit less than St Gaudens. If you want a specific date it will cost you more than a random one. Right now Bullion Exchanges has some in stock, but they don't carry a steady inventory.

I am looking to buy my second Double Eagle (already have a 1907 Saint Gaudens) and was looking to buy a Liberty Head in MS-63. But that is too low? Price go up a lot from >= MS-64 though...

I would stay away from the 1904 Liberty or the 1924 Saint as these are the most common dates. My recommendation for your first purchase would be a 1927 MS65 NGC or PCGS Saint that can be found for less than $2500. You will get the most bang for your buck on this coin and grade. Buy from a reputable dealer.
The Liberty is a difficult find in grades below MS65 with strong luster and minimal marks on obverse. A Liberty in MS65 starts off around 4K.
