I purchased an uncirculated 1909 VDB cent from an ebay seller because it had nice red coloring. I sent it to a Third Party Grader (NGC), which said that coin had been colored. What is the best way of determining if a coin, especially non-clad coins (e.g., Lincoln pennies and recent small dollars (Sacagawea, Presidential, etc.)), have been artificially colored, even after I receive it? Thank you in advance. Edited by Hidalgo 07/17/2020 8:41 pm

If I remember right, the TPG's use a "sniffer machine"...you could buy one of those. Second option is many years of study. 3rd option, post pics here on CCF. John1

Color is sometimes easy to hide, I like red copper coins but found that many are treated. I ended up getting brown MS/AU coins as the color is natural, the price is less and I like brown coins.

When a seller on ebay has a few dozen 'toned' coins, they are definitely 'artificial' toned. I've seen some dealers at coin shows with a whole table full of them. I just snicker and walk on by.

The coin sniffer, is it accurate and can it tell the difference between chemicals applied by the scurrilous and similar chemicals that might occur in the air of mining/smelting towns. Also do the residual chemicals from the artificial toning eventually evaporate or change (degrade, oxidize etc) such that after a few (many?) years the sniffer won't detect them?
