So, early tonight I was scrolling through ebay and looking for suitable type coins. One of which I was kind of casually scrolling through more for entertainment than anything else. I didnt have a representation of this type, but I didnt plan on buying one anytime soon as I already had the T1 of this coin. Well, I happened across a certain coin that I can throughly say I cant not own. Unfortunately its gonna cost me an arm and a lef, but I cant think of an example I'd rather have, so here we are I guess. Has this ever happened to you guys and gals whether at shows or online as well?

Yes, often in the evening when the glass in front of me isn't as full as it was.

The closest thing I can consider is my 1882 nfld fishscale. Usually when I cherry pick coins for really good prices, it's coins that I don't really tend to keep, this how ever was an exception. And I only paid about 1/3 of its market value as well, and that some of these in decent grades that are uncleaned make some SLDs look like 1880 S Morgan's.

@Numis, I plan to, but since I have to wait for some funds (which'll take 2 weeks) I'm gonna wait before posting it. I got the seller to agree to hold it, but you can't be to careful sometimes. Not that I think anyone would do something like that though.

I have never had an unplanned coin purchase. I always do my research beforehand. John1

Most of my best coins are happy accidents. Knowing what I collect in advance I have mental and physical lists of dates and types I need. If I see a coin that is seldom seen (On Trade me in New Zealand, I don't do ebay) and its there for the taking, I may buy it just like that. I found all my 17th century Half crowns that way. I bought a Commonwealth (1656) Halfcrown 3 months ago and have never seen another one since, so I know I made the right decision. Being in the wrong place at the right time always helps. When you atr looking to upgrade your 1937 Halfcrown for $20 - I somehow end up buying a 1697 one for 3 times as much

99% In value are planned , sometimes at the LCS I'll pick up a lower cost coin because I don't have it or it's nice. Lately it's been Fractional Notes, I want to do a type set of the fractional but have no particular note in mind. If I see one at a good price I may pick it up if I don't have it. Same with slabbed IHC, no partícular date just one I don't have.

I find something other than what I started out looking for quite often.

Most of my purchases are unplanned-because I never know what I will see at the LCS or shows (when they had shows).

I was debating on a coin set on Proxibid. Finally decided that I shouldn't spend that much. My cursor had been over the bid button. And as I moved my cursor, I accidentally clicked on the bid button. 1992 6 coin olympic set. Uncirculated and proof of the clad half, silver dollar, and gold $5. Fortunately it was a a time when gold was much cheaper. Paid $650 including Buyers premium and shipping. Just sold the two gold coins to my LCS last week for $850. I collect modern silver commems (especially Olympic) so I was happy to keep those. Prob sell the halves on ebay for 5 or 10 bucks. Made $200 and feel like I got the silver coins for free. Definitely a happy little accident.

Quote: often in the evening when the glass in front of me isn't as full as it was. This is occasionally when I increase my bid on items I already have on my wish list. I have a bad habit of picking up items that were not on my list (or were much farther down the list), when I have bid on several items at an auction abroad where I want to amortize the shipping cost over several lots. If I get near the end of my bids, and have won only one coin, I may quickly look for something else which at least is a fit for my collecting themes. Once recently, it was a lot of two coins from the same year, and I was able to quickly resell one of them, making up 2/3 the cost of the lot. But in another case, I bought something I hadn't researched well, and wound up overpaying (based on after-the-fact research .. or maybe that should be called postsearch), which is really throwing good money after bad.

My collection is a journey based on a theme. Occasionally I have the time and opportunity to save up for something higher end, but usually I treat myself as they pop up on a smaller scale if it fits the budget and corresponds with a collection "need".
