I see in the past this topic of shipping to Oz has come up.

I am interested, after a long time online, of trying to find how fellow CCF members ship to Oz in 2020.

Shipping from Oz to the States is only a couple bucks for a coin. The best rate I found after trying to navigate the USPS site is $27.00! Other googled "inexpensive" ways are even more.

I know from homework and experience reference books can be shipped in the US by a very inexpensive media rate pricing. But this option was something I found through homework as it seems a not-to-often mentioned "secret" with the PO.

So I am wondering if anyone out there knows of a special, similarly not advertised well, rate to send something small inexpensively?

I just find it hard to believe countries can send here for a few bucks and we cannot send out to them for a few bucks.

Thanks for any help.

Not sure where you got the $27.00 price.

Sending a letter via first class international mail to Australia costs $1.20 for up to 1 ounce, plus an additional charge of $.21 if the letter is not machinable (can't be processed by machine). Paying this extra fee is highly recommended if you're mailing coins, by the way, due to the slightly uneven bulky nature of the envelope.

That should be more than sufficient for sending 1 coin properly protected in a regular envelope other than a padded mailer type.

What you don't get for that rate is insurance or tracking and it will go at a slower speed, so please expect delivery times that could exceed 3-4 weeks.

It's a misconception that you can't send merchandise via first class mail. The restrictions are size, weight and thickness of the envelope only. Like most countries, the restriction for Australia, for instance, is 3.5 ounces maximum weight.

The key issue to watch is package thickness and uniformity. Anything more than about 1/4 inch thick runs the risk of getting kicked up to first class package prices, but even then Australia should only be around $17.00 and that get's you tracking and a minimal level of insurance.

Additionally, mailing via a first class international letter generally doesn't require a customs form, whereas the first class package form does. The customs form means the package has to be handed across the counter to a clerk, rather than just dropping it into a letter box, so there's an extra trip to the post office involved.

Thanks a lot for this info - much appreciated! I will likely put it in a regular envelope with posterboard cut to envelope size on both sides and tissue or something light padded around the coin so it does not feel like a coin.

Just remember - thickness and weight are the things that they look at. 1 ounce or more bumps it to the next weight class and more than 1/4" in thickness automatically bumps it to a package.

To paraphrase - "Measure twice, post once".

There was a discussion of the most recent U.S.P.S. regulations on shipping coins internationally recently. I can't find that thread, but the news (for shipping legally) is not good.

I doubt we could post from Australia to the U.S. for a couple of bucks.
The package would have to be under 50g for that. By the time you add some
cardboard for protection, it would take it up to the next level, which is
AUD$8.30.
