You kinda have to ask yourself, what in the minting process could have caused this? I can't think of one thing. Unfortunately it is post strike damage probably from getting dropped, run over and then finally found and spent.
@kt, a great way to learn is to look back through the last 25 or 50 threads in this forum and see what others have posted for errors and damaged coins.

It is good to ask questions if you aren't certain what you have. Never feel bad for asking, as that's how we learn! Your dime unfortunately has suffered from post mint damage ( PMD), and has lost all numismatic value I'm afraid.
