Hello everyone,
I was going through my coin collection and found this half-dollar.
I'm not really figuring that it's anything special but rather am taking it as an opportunity to introduce myself here.

I actually do not collect coins anymore but it was something me & my father did when I was a kid. I've had a huge collection since then and am looking to get rid of it so I'll probably be posting here more often.

So what do y'all think about this coin? What's this damage from?

Alright, I figured it looked like someone was beating on it with something but wanted to ask y'all anyway. Thank you both!

Remember if you can think of a way to use tools to make something "interesting" on your coin, then someone already beat you to it.

Not to me. Looks "scraped" like with a drillbit of some kind.

Seems like I've seen a lot of circular damage like this on various coins and about the same size. Gumball Machine or parking meter type mechanisms? There were old metal coin tubes posted somewhere that supposedly caused damage like this, with a messing with mechanism to hold the coins, but the marks would be centered.

Edit: "messing with" auto-replaced a word that's like a nail but you twist it in instead of pounding it.

Yes, I realize that it's a half dollar, it just seems like something that would occur inside a mechanism where the coin is being rotated. Particularly on the obverse of this one, it appears to be something rotated/scraped against the coin rather than punched/struck into it.
