Rough patches, looks like the coin was meticulously scraped in many areas on the obverse and minimal reverse. Looks like it mostly affected the fields because it trails under the devices at the date and "Liberty".

That's weird man. It looks almost as if tiny drops of acid were slowly eating away at the coin, or if bookworms ate through metal. I have no idea, honestly.

Hard to tell from the pics if this is IN or ON the metal. It could just be a glue residue (or some other substance) on the surface.

A dip in pure acetone might remove it if it is residue.

Pretty much just a silver melt coin now. Too bad it was damaged.

Earle you nailed it! I guess the way it formed around the devices gave it an illusory effect, and it's rock hard so I assumed it was part of the coin, but after seeing it couldn't be an error (thanks to this awesome forum) I busted out the old chisel and found that it does indeed come off.

I got it from one of those aftermarket "last US silver" frames, so I'm guessing a glue was used initially to keep it in place. The others don't have any residue, but just a guess.
