I uploaded new pictures - Hello, I'm very new to coin collecting but I came across this 2017 quarter. I haven't had a chance to weigh it yet (don't have a scale). But the reverse is Very noticeably dull brown. The picture doesn't quite do it justice. Very noticeable from other quarters, it's only the reverse that has this imperfection. I believe it's missing the claD Edited by jasonro26 10/28/2020 8:15 pm

Probably just toning. Also, copper-nickel alloyed coins can get verdigris; you know, the green stuff.

When you crop the images to just a little bit around the coin areas, they images can be a lot larger of the coin and less of the background. I just just have a telescope of see the images. LOL

Copper nickel and copper nickel clad coins will turn brown, and will appear as if they had no nickel in them at all, if they have been in ground burial.

The brown color is only on the reverse side, the front looks perfectly silver colored. The brown color is completely uniform across the reverse.

@jason, first welcome to CCF. Second, can you please provide a weight for your coin? If it is missing a clad layer then it should be underweight, perhaps significantly so.

If it were missing the clad layer, there would be a significant color difference, being that you would have the copper layer exposed. All images I can see above look normal.

Just toned. It is not at all unusual for only one side to tone, if laying on one side for a long period only one side is exposed to the environment.

Have a very close look at the milled edge under high magnification, - evidence of the cladding may be visible.

Missing clad is totally a different color: Without the clad, even the strike is weakened:
