Hey all,

I thought I found a reference for this on Cuds on coins, but the additional die chips on the chin, neck were not on it...

Maybe a new one?

What do you think?

@gb, I'm not convinced that Abe's neck and chin have die chips on them as that looks a little more like displaced metal from a ding to me. I'm less sure about his bowtie and am interested to see what others think.

Let pause and ask a question: What could make the devices extend beyond the outside portions of a coin. Die chips. I agree they are just the dies way of saying I'm getting old. They were there when coin was struck. And can't change back after the die chipped away. Just a spender. If you saved every die chipped coin from the 1950's wheat cents, you would eventually have them all. The dies were used until the dies, died.

I fully admit that I'm not a variety purist. Bowtie die breaks, BIE's , Spikes , Bugs in the wheat. These chips breaks and cracks add a bit of spice to the search and questions to ponder.
Future search addicts might well cut there teeth on these common finds , keeping their interest up while knowledge builds.
The question part that interest me can include why some die failures like BIE's and bugs in the wheat are so prevalent in the 1950's and basically absent in the 1920's.
Both decades saw the dies being used well past exhaustion. Some dates in the 1920's can be extremely tough to find struck with both the obverse and reverse being from fresh dies. That said, there are no Bie's known from the 1920's
What about the die making process changed ? I certainly don't have the answer , but for me , collecting and studying the coins struck from progressively deteriorating dies provides a bit of food for thought.

The only change if that they over used the dies, because they needed more back then. Just like we need a lot more now. They are in the business to create coins. We are the picky ones.
