We see a lot of US cents with centrally-directed linear displacement of the outermost letter/number in the inscriptions (i.e. also the L of LIBERTY). We generally attribute this mechanical damage to the use of gumball machines, where the mechanism tended to "smush" the coin in this way. In the end, though, it is pure speculation as to the specific cause of this damage.
