My mother died at age 97 back in April. She had quite a large stamp collection and I have been going through it to see what she had. Since none of my siblings or I collect stamps, I am going to give the collection to a friend after I take a look at what is in it. I was surprised, as I went through the many envelopes of stamps this afternoon, to find one that contained this well-worn 1923 silver certificate. From my brief research on it, I know it's not worth much, but I would love to know why she saved this particular bill. Paul Bulgerin

Quote: I would love to know why she saved this particular bill. The 1923 $1 bills were still circulating well into the 1940's and early 1950's. My Dad was a milkman and told me people would occasionally pay their milk bills with them. I would imagine the bill was saved by your Mother because it was an unusual piece of currency that someone had given her in change. So unusual, that she saved it. If it were mine I'd put it in a nice currency holder and treasure it as a link to the past.

My mother also saved the first Jefferson nickel she received in 1938, when she was fifteen or sixteen years old. Once the rest of her effects are distributed among the family, I hope that I can add that sentimental piece to my collection.

Thanks, SteveIn Tampa. I think I have a currency sleeve somewhere.
Mom was actually born in 1922. She was 97 and five months old when she died.
She died on her 76th wedding anniversary. Dad passed away in 1999. They had 54 very happy years together.

Very cool! That's a great find and I would totally keep that one in your collection as a memory of your mother.

Make sure you are NOT giving away a valuable stamp collection . They are making a bit of a comeback ( along with a lot of other collectibles ) during the pandemic .
