Hi all, This is such a bad idea! Be the first on the block to honor Millard Fillmore! And let's honor Warren Harding, who let his buddies get rich through graft, peddling off assets belonging to all Americans. Nixon who covered up a third rate burglary and almost brought about a constitutional crisis. LBJ who thought we could finance a war without asking anyone at home to sacrifice for it through extra taxes or amassing public support . Or anyone current or past who asks some Americans to sacrifice for a war, but doesn't ask the folks at home to pay for it-monetarily or otherwise. And since when does the most powerful nation on earth need to finance deficits by issuing coins that folks collect? How about we put some varmits on US coins, like Canada or Australia, instead? My Roosie's worth (2 cents form the 60s are worth about a dime in purchasing power today!)

In my latest conversation with Mr. Castle I asked what would make this dollar coin work? Considering that the U.S. has produced dollar coins off and on since 1794 and none have really worked out all that well, why should this one be different? The last two (sac-sba) only lasted two years each. Does this mean that the Mint will producing two failed dollars for collectors only? The response I received is that the public wants it. So that will make it succeed. Of course, the public said the same things about the SBA and SAC dollars. At some point, congress will wake up and realize that in order for a dollar coin to work that the dollar bill has to be eliminated.

I wish I knew which portion of "the public" they're getting their input from. Overall, I think the only people who really care are the collectors. The average citizen will use whatever form of money is easiest to acquire and carry - hence $1 bills. I think the government believes that "silence gives assent" and this is simply not accurate since I think most people aren't responding out of disinterest.

Like OldDan's line of thought if it makes someone happy, let them be happy. And I agree with that for life is short and we shouldn't get all worked up over the small stuff. But then again, it really doesn't take to much to get me worked up, I'm more like cheese as it ages then wine, and as I revisited this thread I have to go back to blowing my smoke in that as long as the Presidential series is a medal series and not a coin series, so be it. But let us protect the importance of the image that goes on the coin or the importance of the coin would be lost and then quarters will just be tokens for a coke machine etc. Speedy, who will the fence sitters-the undecided collect if there was a presidential series? And those who don't vote at all, are they the debit card users

Gee for a minute I thought they were talking about Hillary!!!!!

So when does the program end? 4 dollar coins per year and in about 11 years we will catch up to the current President. Do we wait until that President leaves office before we issue his/her dollar coin? What about the future Presidents? Do we mint coins during or after their tenure in office...no matter how much they will hated by 1/2 of the American public. Talk about your banana republic coins, we are headed that way! The State Quarter program is nice because it honors the state and final designs for each of the state's quarters are choosen by state residents (for the most part). Real people take on a whole differant tone. Now for me, I can't stand Clinton and I am sure there are many that hate Reagan. Many of our past Presidents (good, bad or otherwise) will be the subject to political discussions. Recently I made a post about these two Presidents: "Here's winner President for the our dollar coin...William Henry Harrison. Never heard of him you say? Well, don't be surprised because he held office for only 32 days. Apparantly good 'ole William liked to hear himself talk and his inaugural address lasted 105 minutes (a record back then). He probably should have wore a coat and hat since it was a cold and rainy day because he immediately became ill after his speech and caught pneumonia. He was the first President to die in office. So what should his coin be? A guy in bed coughing away? That's the legacy I would want to be remembered for...darn right he deserves to grace the American dollar coin. What he did prior to becoming President is NOT the issue. Their tenure in office IS the issue and will be discussed/argued forever! If you look at Lincoln's life before becoming our 16th President, you will be asking yourself, how-in-the-world did he ever get elected? His tenure as President was no way represented of his life leading up to this office...but that's just my opinion and Southern states had a much differant opinion back in 1909 when he first graced the penny. Let's look at Ford? Ford wasn't even elected to office. Agnew ran with Nixon, not Ford. Ford gets the presidency after the Agnew and Nixon resignations. He couldn't even defeat Carter in 1976. His coin should be him falling down the steps of Air Force One. Commemorative coins, yes...US circualted coins, absolutely not. As for teaching out kids...best way to educate your kid is to allow parents a choice as to where to send their kids. If their school is failing, then they should take their tax dollars they would have spent and be allowed to allocate them to a school (private or government) of their CHOICE. Then watch the kids learn when competition is introduced. I learned about Presidents by reading...kids should try it sometime.

Hi Zac, I concur that this is a bad idea, but to answer your question concerning when/where program would end, the bill apparently excludes the sitting president. GF is the answer to the trivia question- who is the only person to serve as both VP and President without being elected to either office. Was there opposition to AL on the cent when it was introduced? Learn something new every day... Don

Zacgold I must say again that even if we don't like a president we ought to have respect them and not pick on them in any way. Speedy

Pick on them? Everyday, political discussions are offered for and against our elected officials. Presidents are no differant. Through the history of the United States, we had great Presidents, average Presidents, and the bottom of the barrel. If anybody deserves to grace American coins and currency are our founding fathers. They took the ultimate risk. The 55 that signed the Declaration of Independence basically were signing their death sentence as most lost their property, wealth, and family members as a result of their actions and 8 long years of war against England. Even after the battle of Yorktown in 1781, the war lasted another 18 months! But for other Presidents that don't even make the grade? Do they deserve it? Is that what our founding fathers wanted? Before we can go forward, we must understand the past. Hate to be the playground bully, but if an past elected official doesn't deserve the honor of gracing American coins and currency, I will continue to "pick" on them. I'll respect them while in office, but they are fair game after they leave office as history will descide their place among others.

Ideally, this goes for our treatment of all people, not just presidents. However, our society being what it is, it is inevitable that people will continue to voice their opinions strongly and in the earshot of many. Since our freedom of speech is one of the great things about this country, isn't it ironic that same right can be used to malign our leaders who preserve that right for us? Another thought: There are many forums who discourage political discussion. If the presidential series is instituted, how will these coins be discussed? You can't get a more politically affiliated coin series than this.

It would appear to me that our founding fathers made the effort to come to this country due to the fact they were sick and tired of being oppressed, over governed, and taxed to death by the current (at the time) government of England. They were more than fed up and had made up their minds to run and run they did. Eventually the wars came to finally win their freedoms and break away from that which they fled in the first place. Does any of this sound familiar? Only difference is there is no place left to run and our government has become that which our forefathers fled!!! A huge monster out of control and we the people sat back and let it happen! And again today we have the self appointed, self righteous trying to tell all the rest of us how to live and I would assume this has a tremendous amount of influence on WHY we are all fed up with a dead politician on our coinage when this country has a tremendous amount of other things that are worth fighting and dying for. Those are the values I would rather see on our coinage!
