PCGS has this 1802 cent certified as XF(45). Do you think this is a good specimen for $1500? I am looking at getting either a 1798 or an 1802. I like this coin, but am wondering if I should expect more detail for the grade.

I like the coin, but am kinda comparing it to a 1798 XF(40) I didn't move on this past summer with stronger details that I am kind of kicking myself for letting go. I included a picture of the 1798 cent below.

if I were spending $1500 on a coin I would know what to expect for the grade. if I didn't I would hold off on any more spending until I did.

The first set of photos look completely different from the second set.
And what is this doubling of the forehead, nose, and chin in the first photo? A photographic fluke?

How about this one, a nice BN: https://coins.ha.com/itm/large-cent...1326-22031.s

Thanks, NumisEd. The first two photos are the same coin--maybe that fluke is just lighting. The third image is of an entirely different coin. I love the one you suggested, though. It looks great! I don't want to buy anything I won't love. My collection is not large, but it is full of weird coins I love for their individual quirks and charms.

$1500 is pretty much full retail for this coin. I agree with the PCGS grade however due to all the surface nicks and scratches I would not pull the trigger at this price

I do not have a problem with the price for a quality coin. The details on the coin are fine for the grade. The coin has some corrosion in the hair on the obverse and a spot on the reverse. A little nicked up for the grade. The coin looks like it has had an old cleaning.

Thanks, everyone. I am finding a lot of 1802 cents in EF(40) or EF(45) for way above full retail price, like even north of 2000 USD. which seems quite high. I agree that to spend any significant amount of money on a coin, it must be one that we love, and I will probably wait until I find one with great details and good overall quality at the right price. I am surprised, though, at how overpriced a lot of these cents seem to be compared to full retail price.

Overpriced on ebay or overpriced in general?

NumisEd: Not only on ebay--some of these seem to be priced at over 1000 USD over retail. This doesn't mean they sell at that price, but that seems to be a huge margin.

In my opinion many dealers put their coins on ebay to "showcase" them with unrealistic prices. Some even claim the TPG grades are wrong and instead assign their own grades (for instance a rare proof or specimen) being self proclaimed experts. Fortunately, one has a lot of research material available online.

From my personal perspective, I would wait for a nicer looking one (like the one you passed on). It should rock your world for that price unless it is a tough date. Patience, Grasshopper.
