The story begins last Friday when I told the wife that I was planning to go to a small local coin show on Sunday. She hands me a clipping from the paper that announced a local "Coin Auction" on Sunday. "Why don't you check this out first and go to the coin show later?" she asked. Not a bad idea says I ... man she is a coin collector's dream spouse!

Fast forward to Sunday. Viewing was early (7am-9am) and the auction was to start promptly at 9am. There were over 800 lots! I had a modest sum of cash and a check ... yes they take local checks ... I'm in! At 9am there were only about 15 bidders on the floor when the action started. Lots were going cheap ... Whitman and Dansco Lincoln albums missing just the keys (09-S, S-VDB, 14-D, 22 no-D, and 31-S) were selling for $5. There were some unc's in those folders, too. Next came the mint and proof sets from the late 50's and early 60's. I picked up a 56 Proof set for $27 and a lot with three 61 mint sets for $14 total! 5 and 1/2 hours later I woke up and asked myself "Do you have any idea what you've committed to buy?" I looked under my chair at the stacks of 2x2's and envelopes. I think I had better stop and find out. I went to the check-out lady and she totalled me up ... $550! This was way more than I had intended to spend on this event ... what's the old expression ... "go broke saving money".

This story does have a happy ending though. The wife told me "Merry Christmas" when I showed her the stack of coins and the final cost. I ended up with the proof and mint sets mentioned, about 30 Mercury dimes from AU up (a 29-P that is probably a 65 FB with gorgeous toning), 5 Morgans including a 94-S (F12), 1839 O/O Seated dime in VF, a three-cent silver, a two-cent piece, 3-cent nickel, half-dimes, etc., etc.

If I ever get to go again I'm taking a small calculator, and a bag to carry that stuff home.

Hey, at those prices don't feel bad. You can recoop some or all of your money with a few sales of your own.

Wow, that's awesome. At those prices, who needs a calculator? Just take more cash and a wheelbarrow!
My wife is cool about these sort of things too.
Been married over 17 years and she even went to the gun shop with me the other night and I didn't come out empty handed.
Ooops .. wrong forum!

Don't know about that. I'm still in the "try-out" period ... 34 yrs, 4 months and 11 days I really don't deserve her.

If you were going to go to the doghouse, we should have gone ahead & went over to Larry Flynt's to make it worthwhile!

I would hate to think that is what my key-less Dansco LHC album is worth!

What a great story--and yes, congrats on both winnings, especially your wife. Coins are expendable, but not true, lifelong friends.

Reading the story I was sure you would end up giving half of those to your wife for an early Christmas Present. Not to late you know.

She knew what she was getting herself into when she handed you the ad. Sounds like you did pretty good, though. Any photos of the purchases? Favorite purchase?

Sounds like my wife to be. She is awesome! Just as interested in coins as me. Attends all the shows I attend.

My wife really pushed for me to go to the Houston Money Show last weekend. I drove the 3 hours there, was at the show for just over 3 hours and drove the 3 hours back to go to a holiday party. When I got home she asked how much I spent and when I told her she asked: "Is that all? I thought you would spend more." If it was not such a drive I would have turned around and went back.
