Hi, Ive recently looked into acquiring a bust half and came upon one that I was a little suspicious about. I shop on instagram, ebay, etc. and have a basic idea of sellers that are trustworthy and those that are not. That being said, the seller claims the coin is authentic and I wanted to post it here to see what everyone else had to say. Thanks in advance! :D Also, if authentic, any idea what a good price/value would be for this?!   Edited by CoinHunter00

I am not a specialist in this series, so take with a grain of salt my opinion that the coin looks wrong to my eye and I would be very suspicious of authenticity.
Also - it's dated 1803 but your thread references an 1804 dated coin. Is this the correct photo?

Pass on the coin unless the seller is willing to send photos that are in focus. The value depends a lot on the grade if the coin was VF details $350 and XF40 straight grade $1400, but can not grade from these photos.

I'm nowhere near an expert on these, buts looks OK to me.
The die lines in the ear are on both coins...

I am no expert on draped bust dollars, having stopped collecting US type coins 40 years ago but the obverse rim is totally wrong for an early bust coin struck without a collar. Should be denticles, not a perfect raised rim. Should have denticles all around like cipster's coin has. My vote is fake

The obverse rim looks okay to me for a VF draped bust half dollar. It's a large 3 variety, and it matches Overton-103 exactly, so I'm leaning towards genuine (unless it's a cast counterfeit). As others have mentioned, the photos aren't good enough to assess the surfaces, so it could be a details coin.

Better pics are needed.
Also a pic of the rim from the side.
Need weight.
As mentioned by jfransch the rim doesn't look right.
The stars look wrong also.
Cleaning is often used to disguise a fake by the way.

OK, you guys are scaring the cr*p out of me as I bought mine raw from a good friend who owned it for many years. Mine looks like a twin of the ops coin.
Here's an incredible coincidence. I'm so bored that I recently sent this coin out for grading along with many others so let's see how that goes.

Genuine IMO. I've bought and sold over a dozen raw bust halves and dollars with no issues. As long as you can properly attribute the coin and be sure of it's authenticity it's a non issue
