I find myself with about 8 1976-P Eisenhower dollars and my new Whitman Album telling me that there is a Variety 1 and a Variety 2. What am I looking for to designate between the two? My Red Book is useless here. Thank you in advance.

I found the http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/ site does a great job at looking at photos of differences. The Type 1 vs Type two is bold lettering on reverse. Go purchase some 1975 mint sets to get the bold lettering as that 1975 mint set will have 1976 Ikes with bold font.

I too always wondered about that. I did read somewhere about that bold lettering but sure is rather minor difference.

The difference is quite noticeable when viewed side by side. However If you can't tell the difference by the thickness of the letters, you can look at the letter "U" in "Pluribus" and "Unum" In Type 1 (bold letters) the first U in Pluribus is pretty much directly over the first U in Unum where it is NOT in the type 2 (thin letters)

Awesome. Thank you so much for the tips. I will put them to use later today. Edit: I seem to have all variety 2. The U s are not directly above each other. The type 2 must be the more common of the two.

Easiest way for me to tell is the tail of the second S in STATES On type one it rises up to the center bar of the E, on the type 2 it doesn't rise above the top of the bottom bar. It is a little hard to see the end of the tail on the image above but it actually reaches the center of the middle bar.

Are these the same differences for the 1976-Ds and the 1976-Ss Varieties 1 and 2?

The easiest way I ever found - was taught this by my coin dealer when the two types were first discovered. A quick glance at the R in dollar does it: Type 1 = straight leg R (like a 1 is straight) Type 2 = curved leg R (like a 2 has a curve)
