I recently picked up a 1980-D LMC struck on a dime planchet (sandwich type, not silver). I'll put up some pictures as soon as I have the time to shoot them. A question in the meantime ... how rare/common are these? What is the value in say AU55? Thanks all.

Nice pickup! They are pretty rare and in almost all cases worth a few hundred or more. Fred Weinberg has some MS examples listed for $475-725 depending on year and grade.

I picked it up at the recent auction for around $8.

Guess it will be in my next PCGS submission.

Great buy! Was a coin auction? I'm surprised the other collectors didn't jump on it.

I like it when they are off center and cut off part of the devices. Then you know for sure they are an off metal coin.

I'm thinking $80-$125, but I could be off. I can tell you that if genuine, $8 was a complete steal.

One thing that is important to check for is if it is a Lincoln struck on a dime planchet or if it is a Lincoln struck on a dime- if there is evidence of a Roosevelt strike, the value goes way up

Thanks everyone for the knowledge. Here are the pictures ... I haven't shot anything this small yet (usually Morgans). It definitely looks better in-hand. Next step is to weigh it.

Weight was 2.26g

Sweet Find! Nice date on it. Real deal for a steal!
There is already one on the forum with that name, but I might be the "Copper Nickel Grand-Daddy".

Thanks everyone. I took another look at the coin and now believe it's BU. The mint luster is undisturbed (you couldn't tell that by my pictures ) on both the obverse and reverse. I think the weakness and uneveness of the strike led me to believe it wasn't UNC. I haven't dealt with too many of these. I plan to send it off to PCGS with my next submission. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
