1934 A US $10 North Africa Yellow Seal Emergency Issue Hello All, I would greatly appreciate assistance and input on the grade of this note. All images are scans at extremely high resolution (Dpi). The images have not been altered in anyway. Thank you and I look forward to the responses. Yellow88

Very difficult to evaluate high-grade notes from photos or scans. This looks like EF or AU.

Hi Coinfrog and thank you for your comment.
I am somewhat of a neophyte on this topic and would like to increase my knowledge so would you mind elaborating on the evaluation difficulties or skip that entirely by stating how to resolve the issue entirely.
Thank you again and I appreciate you sharing your wealth of knowledge.

Zooming in, Do I see faint evidence of a center-fold and is the upper right corner torn or folded? Hard to tell from photo...AU
Edited: After zooming in on last reverse pix...I see a center fold...is that correct?

Hi Greasy Fingers,
Wow... you have a very good eye. Indeed there is a center fold. I had to put the note under 45 x magnification, powerful bright light, and test viewing at all kinds of different angles. I missed it initially. Oh.. and yes.. I saw it on the reverse.
The corners on the other hand are sharp and pointy. I do see the same appearance of a fold as you pointed out. The cause is due to some type of visual distortion produced by either the scanner and/or the fact the note is in a plastic numismatic note holder. Also due to scanner type and holder type I can't lay the note perfectly flat/completely flush with the scan surface.
I'm wary of removing the note from the holder simply because I'm a but clumsy (all thumbs) and I do not want to accidentally harm the note.

Hello John1, Great website and 95% of the time it is more than enough to suffice. This is one of those occasions that despite taking the extra time and effort it did not suffice. Actually I should put the onus on my deficiency and not the site.

Greasy is right - clear evidence of a center fold. Also some evidence of embossing on the reverse. I'll say AU-50/53, possibly Q.

Overall a nice note. I'd keep this one if it were mine but would not send for grading.
Detractors: bumped corners, the center fold is obvoius from the reverse photos, centering is off. Might be more issues if someone tried to hide that center fold.

Central fold and some very light soiling.
I'd call it somewhere between high XF to Low AU.
Nice note!

It appears that the upper photo is probably closest to the right color. The lower photo shows the seal as almost orange. The best way I've found to detect folds is with side lighting. My upper photo is a flat scan and the lower is with side lighting.

Quote: The best way I've found to detect folds is with side lighting. My upper photo is a flat scan and the lower is with side lighting. Great demo post Steve. The trouble with scans are 2 fold: a) often the person who scanned the note later adjusts the exposure (or other settings) so that soiling on the note's surface can no longer be detected. b) its usually impossible to see the embossing I'm inclined to "guess-timate" this $10 to be EF45 like "CelticKnot" & "westernsky." That was my initial reaction. There does appear to be some mild soiling on reverse & obverse lower border, bumped corners, plus the hard centre fold looks nearly like a crease to me (so its been likely pressed out). Not sure it would make EPQ but otherwise nice eye appeal from the front.
