I have a 1938s RPM-001 that looks to have a nice strong secondary. Unfortunately, while removing some grime I must have gotten a bit too aggressive with my porcupine needle. It is currently my favorite needle and scratching has not been an issue before this. I would like to try and minimize the scratches and would like suggestions on what might help. Thanks *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

I'm guessing anything you try would only make it worse.

Huh, didn't realize a quill was hard enough to do that to the surface. Really there isn't much you can do with a scratch. Like Mr Frog stated, anything you may try will probably just make it worse. Chalking it up as a lesson learned is about the best thing you can do.

What I have found in the past (spent much time behind a porcy needle and a dissecting microscope) is that f my needle makes a mark, its b/c the rare occasion has occurred where a micro piece of dirt hard enough to scratch the copper is under the point of the needle. Get a junk cent out. Wipe the end of the needle down well bu pinching it and pulling through a cotton cloth. Try seeing if the micro dirt is still there with the junk penny. Hope this helps.

If it was mine, I'd rub it with nose oil and keep it as a pocket piece for a few weeks...just remember not to spend it

I have never used a porcupine needle so my method may not work for you. I use a fresh rose thorn , but more importantly, I make sure the area is wet with Naphtha . This lets me move the crud around and it then floats away.

Altogether now... "NEVER clean your coins." Period.

Thanks all for the replies. I have heard some others suggest carrying a pocket of change and that is probably the way to go. Though there was no mention of nose oil, lol.
Cannot fix it so the best I can do is help to tone the shiny metal. I have also heard of leaving it on a window sill in the sun for a few weeks, but the pocket change idea seems more plausible.
