Hello,

I have been a lurker here for a few months, but finally decided to come aboard and join the discussions.

Working in a smaller retail establishments has allowed for me to gather quite a variety of coins over the years. One advantage of working the smaller retail, is that as part of the management team, I am always counting the register drawers down, buying and selling change to the drawers, etc.

What do I collect? Everything and anything I can get my hands on as far as United States coins are concerned. Most of the foreign coins I come across aren't worth purchasing from the till as I would have to purchase them according to how they were received. For example, a 5 pence coin would have to be purchase for a dime as it is most often redeemed as a dime or came out of a dime roll. In any event, most of the foreign coins I come across at work get put into a drawer, at work, and when we have several coins, we put them in a small zip lock bag and sell them for a profit. They never last very long.

So what have I bought from the till? I have have found all the Jefferson nickels from 38 to 59 (the years I save), with the exception of a 38S and a 50D. Thousands and thousands of wheat cents, though it has been a better part of 20 years since I have found an IHC....go figure! Silver coinage of all shapes and sizes. In the past week, I have found two silver Roosevelts and two war time nickels. Silver quarters I may find one or two a year. Silver halves run about one every year or two. Mercury dimes run about the same as silver quarters, though when I find one, I typically will run into several.

What are the best silver finds? A no date Standing Liberty quarter and a 1916S Merc. (had my heart pumping on this one until I got the Loupe out and realized it was an S instead of a D.....LOL

My most prized find? MS-64 (PCGS) 100% Struck Through OBV 1999D Jefferson nickel. The local dealers have offered me from nothing (told me that I should just spend it......) to $40.00. Still haven't been able to obtain an accurate value on it. What did I pay for this find? .05 and almost passed it up as I orginally thought it was just damage!

Interesting finds? Yep, had some of those also. I have found a blank penny, nickel and dime planchet (dime was post 64 and penny was post 82). I have two State Quarters that appeared to be clipped, one of them a double clip. Several coins that I am unsure as to whether or not they are damage or errors, but kept them anyways. A number of pennies that have been stamped with the Masons symbol, Kennedy's head, etc.

And the list goes on........way too much to list.

What about the coin store? The best deal was an 1852 3C silver, purchase for 100.00, sent it in to PCGS and it came back MS-64 making it at least a 400.00 - 500.00 coin (based on auctions on Heritage Auctions). I have other purchases that have appreciated in value at a higher percentage rate, but not as quickly.

Do I sell or trade any of my collection? No. The plan is to build something that I can leave to my daughter who is starting to develop into a coin collector herself. She came home from a school dance with two Ben. Franklin half dollars she purchased for face value and then proceeds to tell me that there were six more...DOH!

Take care,
Rob

Very admirable!

I have never sold anything, but I did trade most (but not all) of my duplicate silver half dollars (found CRH) with a dealer to help complete my Franklin half set.

Nice to hear from you. That is the fun of collecting. You have a good opportunity to get some good ones and, obviously, you are taking advantage of it.

I don't know if anyone else has told you, but your dealer is lacking quite a bit of necessary knowledge to be claiming to be a professional numismatist...but over time with collecting and visiting coin shops and going to coin shows, you will find that far more dealers have no clue what they are really doing than actually do know.

In this hobby knowledge is king, and a little knowledge can go a long way. Study hard in a couple of choice areas. Get all the information you can on those areas. Study all you can on them, then go to a show armed with knowledge. I have NEVER come away from a coin show without managing to pay pennies on the dollar for the coins I bought...usually spending $100-$300 coming away with $800-$3000 worth of coins...ALL honestly purchased for the price the dealer asked for them.

There are TONs of nice coins still out there for the picking. Undergraded, undervalued, varieties sold as normal coins, errors sold for way too little. They are all over the place.

Hi all,

I know it is bit late, but I posted some pics under the the error/variety forum. They are posted under Robbob (versus Robbob8) (I didn't realize that I somehow managed to register twice?) Not too sure how that happened.
