Hey, how often do you (in the USA) find wheat cents in change or coin rolls from banks?

So far, I've searched around 2000 pennies 1-cent coins from Canadian banks here in Victoria, and found 5 wheat cents, including a 1945S.

Newer American cents are unremarkable to find here, but I've gotten about 6 from the 1960s so far.

Other interesting finds include an AU 1994 Bermudan cent, British 5 pence (in a cent roll), and a couple dimes. This last bunch I've gotten a decent amount of toned coins as well, some quite beautiful. I've been getting tons of AU coins from between 2000-2008, and I'm also wondering if they're worth keeping, maybe sell a couple rolls of them for something over face value.

Thanks for all your input!

I would estimate that I get around 4-5 per 1000 coins searched

My last box was 21 wheats. Average has been about 15 lately. My best 25.00 box was 67 wheats. Doubt I'll ever see that again.

I've also been finding roughly 10 Canadian pennies/box.

Looks like an average of 0.5% so far! 1 in 200. It would be interesting to know what portion of the 0.5% are from the 1950's.

I may have to dump a roll of wheaties into circulation!

Wow, I must have extraordinary luck! I get 1 in every 100 at least, and those are rolls right from the bank.

Same here..about 8-12 per box. I have had better luck with personally wrapped coins, esp during Christmas and a bad economy.

Somewhere around 10-15 per $25 box is average these days. Back when I started roll searching in the late 1970s, I searched rolls $10 at a time and would end up with 50-75 per 1000 coins. Some of them were older wheat cents too.

Coppercoins - wow, you must have quite a collection from your searches!

MikeP - you're getting around 10 Canadians per 2500? I've gotten 102 Americans so far from 2000 searched, and it's quite unremarkable to get American cents in change etc.

When looking through bank boxes, I find that if you find one unusually good coin, there very well might be one or more similar to it in another roll in the box. The coins that make up those boxes are bulk coin turned into the armored car companies from banks with either counting machines or a large number of bulk customer rolls. Coinstar also contributes a lot. It probably isn't uncommon to see little old ladies walk into the bank and pour a coffee can of loose change into a counter. I found three Indian cents in a box a couple of weeks ago. I've been looking through rolls and boxes for over 20 years and had never found an Indian. Suddenly, three in a box!
