I've been re-modeling an 1861 home and found under the front entry steps a badly corroded coin. It is very similar in size to a Morgan silver dollar, but I can't give exact measurements due to the thickness of corrosion. On one side you can clearly see what appears to be ONE in the middle of the coin, and you can make out other letters around the perimeter. On the reverse side, it appears to have 1799 printed at the base. Can anyone help identify this coin? Thank you! SeaQuest

@sq, first welcome to CCF. Second, this looks like a token to me, but having clear pics might help with gleaning a little more information. Any chance that you can get the focus perfect and then repost overall pics? Thx.

Maybe . . . What appears to be 1799 actually is part of the word ONE DOLLAR where your image is upside-down. I think I see a large $ sign to the left of a large numeral 1 in the center. Does it say "In Cash" on the bottom? I don't know?

Nice sleuthing @tng. I think that you are onto something. Having a date of 1799 (or even 1700) didn't make much sense for the US unless it was Masonic.

Quote: Check this out, since this slot machine dollar token is iron, it would make sense to have corroded and rusted to appear as it does today. Good information - Is this your final answer?

TNG & everyone else who viewed/replied, thank you! When I compare the images of Mr's Sy's $1 token against what I can make out on my token, I think you may very well have a correct answer. Yes, I wish it could have been a different answer; I know the front part of my home was an antique store for many years, and the person from whom we bought it collected US coinage so I had higher hopes. I really appreciate everyone's quick reply.
