Hello! I am not in the market for one at the moment, but this 1799 dollar looks kind of like a Chinese fake. I am trying to train my own eye better here--what do you guys think?

I'm not sure. It looks like it *might* be a B-17 but I'm no expert on these.

The coin doesn't strike me as an obvious fake but I am no expert on these.
The seller appears to be very reliable and I would personally trust them. (That either it is good, of they will make it right if it is not)

To my amateur eye it looks genuine.

The dealer could be asked if it sticks to a magnet...or if it could be sent to a TPG to get authenticated. This one I'm cautiously optimistic on being genuine.

Thanks, guys! As I said I am not looking to buy it--I am just trying to "train my eyes." I am eager to learn how to differentiate fakes from genuine ones of this color and cleanness. I would never make a real accusation without feeling like I have a strong leg to stand on, and I would never make one without asking the right questions first. I really appreciate your opinions and time on this forum.

I think it's a genuine, late die state of B-8. It's got all the appropriate die markers and die cracks for that die marriage. The obverse has a cleaned appearance, which might be why it sort of has a fake look to it.

If it is genuine, why is it not slabbed? For the price the seller is asking ($2K+), the extra cost to have it graded is a rounding error.

Some coin and paper money dealers (especially old-timers) just don't believe in slabs.

If $(coin) > $500, then no slab = no sale (for me).

There are still lots of high-priced coins out there that aren't slabbed. Perhaps it was once slabbed as a details coin for cleaning, and the owner preferred it raw. Or maybe it was in a type album. But I agree that not having it graded and authenticated may limit the buyer pool.

I've seen mostly fakes on here, and again this looks to be a fake, JMHO.

Late to the party here and no opinion on the authenticity of the coin in question.

That said - definite opinion on the ebay seller hsturn - run away from his/her auctions as hsturn his personally proven to me to be a seller of doctored/cleaned authentic coins.

I shudder to recall the days when I was a newbie on classic commemorate coins - 15 years ago - and naively purchased several hstrun coins based on the ebay photos - all proved to be PCGS 'details genuine cleaned'.

I can't believe the seller is still active and all those positive ebay reviews.

As they say ... buyer beware. Coming from hsturn there is a nefarious reason this otherwise valuable coin is not TPG certified.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

The coin appears to be a regular date, 7/6 stars that has die cracks that match the variety in LIBERTY and STATES. The example appears to be genuine. The obverse color and toning is similar to a Chinese fake, but it could be photos.
