Hello, I believe there is something fishy going on here in the "United States of America" lettering on the reverse side of this 1988 "D" Jefferson nickel. I think there may be some doubling or something like this going on in the lettering directly above as well. This coin was found in pocket change and I am no expert in these matters so any help in figuring out how to categorize this coin would be greatly appreciated. I have spent quite a bit of time looking around online attempting to identify what is going on with the coin but have thus far not been able to come up with anything. OGjimbo I got into Jeffersons not very long ago (I'm more of a Lincoln nut) and have seen the exact same thing you are looking at on your Jefferson coin. I agree with Coin Dude in that this is Die Deterioration Doubling. This is basically caused by an overly used and worn out die which starts to impart the weird designs on the devices, or lettering, that you see.

@Scuba1 and That Coin Dude; Oh jeeze, I swear I totally know that is the reverse, I just put obverse by mistake, how embarrassing. Anyways, is Die Deterioration Doubling cool?

No worries jimbo about listening it as the obverse...... we all make mistakes because we are all human. DDD has no added value. Beauty is all in the eye of the beholder so to speak. Some Die Deterioration examples look really cool and neat. If it was me I would just keep it for future reference. Good luck

Thanks Scuba, while I think it would be really cool to find a coin of some added value in pocket change, I prolly wouldn't sell it anyway.... Unless it was worth like hundreds of dollars maybe. But I will not be throwing this nickel back into loose change, I'll keep it just because to me, it looks cool.

to the CCF! OGjimbo said... Quote: Oh jeeze, I swear I totally know that is the reverse, I just put obverse by mistake, how embarrassing. Don't be embarrassed when posting on CCF. If it weren't for the edit button I would look REALLY bad. I just think of any incorrect term or wrong spelling I post as further proof that I'm a real human and not a robot.

Extreme die wear. A lot of the Reverse designs for many years showed a weak design on nickels. So this is common to find on the pre Single squeeze dies on the Nickels.
