Well this was NOT a purchase I had really "planned" on. I was actually about ready to pull the trigger on a different coin when I saw this pop up. I paid greysheet retail for it, so a bit "high" but 1859 Indians are nearly impossible to find with luster like this, a strike like this and as spot free as this. Finding one with all 3 I thought was gonna be impossible since generally they're carbon spotted to next week. This is also very important since this finishes my small cents type set! Who would have thought 2 denominations in a week?! Anyway, I'm glad to finally have tracked this down. In an old PCGS Gen 1.2 holder.

Conservatively MS 64. Those two defects in front of the bust keep it there for me. Others may well disagree.

I'm at MS63 very nice the strike is just a touch soft around the diamonds to get this one any higher. Not too many carbon spots either which is getting harder to find coins without them. Nice coin.

Maybe I am too conservative, maybe not.
Very nice coin. I like 'it but I will put to 60+. Reason?: the edges, background and the date.
What your opinion. Soon I can I will post a certified 64.

Well I'm seeing some softness obverse and reverse , but real nice eye appeal . Virtually spot free ,not too happy with the reverse edges a little ragged and bottom of bow not complete .I don't think you would spend top dollar for an AU-58 so I'm going to say MS-63+

some strike weakness on both sides. fields looks good. just based on the photos presented MS64 but I think its right in the 65 range overall and probably looks better in hand

Very nice and lustrous IHC you've got, Grape. I am looking for a 1859 IHC myself, but noticed that many (most?) of these cents show no luster at all even in Mint State. Not sure why. Is that a property of the copper-nickel alloy?

Hi Ed,
No, it's not a property of the alloy per say. Many copper nickel indians from 1860-1864 show great luster, however I believe it has to do with initial storage way back when, though I have no evidence to back that up. Don't give up though, it took around a year to find this one but it's really luck of the draw if you find a nice one available.
