I found this Wheat penny in a porcelain heart dish full of Asian coins I bought from an antique store for $2. I'm curious whether it is a real penny and to know a little bit about it.

The rim is "peeling" and it appears as if the previous owner may have tried prying it with a small tool. The penny is a very feint yellow color and only the rim is magnetic. It also feels like it weighs more than a typical penny.

I'm new to the Coin World, so any info is appreciated! Thanks!

It was put in a bezel to be worn as a necklace or bracelet.

Thanks, bobby131313! That makes sense and makes me feel silly for not thinking about that! xD

Now that the rim has been identified, I will have to seek more info about the penny inside the bezel ;)

Additionally, it was electroplated with some metal; hence, the silvery luster.

A common '58 D sent to the plater. And, the plating appears somewhat compromised.

I have to agree. Cool looking, perhaps a conversation piece, but not a lot more. Worth only a few cents I'm afraid.

to the CCF!

p.s.- Not a good idea to hold your coins against your skin. Oils from your skin/fingerprints can ruin any numismatic value your coins might have. Just fyi. A better strategy, if you continue in our hobby would be to purchase inexpensive cotton gloves (available anywhere than sells hobby supplies). Bonne chance!
