For starters, this is a very late die stage coin (advanced Die Deterioration). Very cool. Could you add an end-on photo or two of the rim--vicinity of 'IN' and 'LIBERTY'(obverse). Thanks.

Also Machine Doubling, DDD and split plating. A whole lot of nothing for value. But an education piece to show to a new collector.

Fascinating coin and conversation. I am guessing that coins spit out so quickly that individual coins or a small batch like this make it through regularly. Are minting presses sophisticated enough to sense die wear, breaks, etc. or do humans still do most of the quality control?

Stay well,

Interesting question? But let me run a question to you? Do you check the sites to see what RPMs/DDOs/DDRs are listed on the sites? That would be more productive. See what to look for on a Variety coin. Look at what the attributed punch doubling or hub doubling produces. Many times we forget what to look for? If we look for different stuff, you will find all kinds of damaged coins that look different. But a damaged coin is just a face value coin. Instead look to see what to look for. If I was going to a new location, would I just take any road to get there? Be better to see where on a map, where to go. Same way with coins. Look to see what is out there first. Then when you get a better idea of what to look for, then you have a better guide to find what is worth more than face value on coins.
When you figure out what could happen on a variety coin, then you expand the search:
Example: I was looking at the 2004 DDR cents. So I was making images of what the two DDRs look like side by side:

Side by side of a normal one and a DDR. Making one with the 001 and 002 SBS.

Then it hit me? Well if this occurred on one year? Why couldn't it happen on other years on the same area. So I started looking closer at other years the Memorial cents. And guess what I found.

So noting what to look for, gave me a direction to go. So getting familiar to what to look for helps a lot more than aimlessly looking for something different on a coin. Knowing that Machine Doubling alters one side of a device and caused by a machine, and knowing that a doubled die had the doubling on the die, and enlarges the centers of the devices, and not the outside edges, helps you to find what we are really looking for.
My favorite is Variety coins. I collect mostly Lincoln cents. But as I find other coins that are varieties, I put them aside for references. But mostly now, I'm concentrating on helping others to learn and be glad to share what they know. That is my goal now. I've been doing this for many years.
