Not my cup of tea. Subject matter way too trivial for a legitimate NCLT issue. The Royal Australian Mint has done the same sort of thing.
Other collector opinions differ, and that is why these issues continue to be produced.
On the other hand, I will admit that I will collect this sort is trivial issue, provided that I can pick them from pocket change from general circulation at face value. Even so, the Mint still makes a tidy profit.

Just what every proud Brit expects! On the coin's OBV is the regal visage of HM the the Queen who has the illustrious position of being the longest reigning monarch for Britain, and who knows, maybe the world? Even the Victorian age so remembered in history was a shorter time period than the modern Elizabethan Age! And...we flip the coin over and find uninspired circles and a square with faces on them a 1st grader could have drawn. The royal heritage of British coinage and history is surely being furthered by this design. Uh huh.

Geez, lighten up people. They are celebrating children's books, not "uninspired circles and a square with faces on them a 1st grader could have drawn." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Men

I agree, wallpaper coins and a waste of silver. Normally these gimmick issues are reserved for stamp issues, of which Royal Post does excessive issues.
Putting hippy dippy 70s characters on silver coins is just daft.

"Kinderspiel" is the best word I can think of to describe this design. Honoring children's books is a great idea. But no matter how much you love mustard, and no matter how much you love ice cream, believe me, they do not go together. Ask me how I know. As to lightening up...well...maybe. But from the perspective of a former history teacher, I see this kind of thing OK for a joke where everyone knows its a joke. But when they are trying to be serious while mixing mustard and ice cream... Quote: not "uninspired circles and a square with faces on them a 1st grader could have drawn Yet that is exactly what I saw. Rather than, "Wow - nice representation of the British Bulldog!" or whatever normal design, the initial first impression is this design to me was "what in the world are those primitive-looking (even for) cartoony things doing on a coin of the British Commonwealth. To each his own. This was the impact the design had on me. Maybe in the UK, since they are immersed in their own culture, there is a different impact?

I will add my support to the Hogarth view. I feel many of the recent collectable issues from The Royal Mint are "naff" in the extreme. I understand why they need to do it - the demand for circulation coinage is declining rapidly so they have to make their profit from selling collectable issues, and the easiest market to sell to is the young one. Pester factor from children will ensure they flog lots, and in some ways this is good for the long-term numismatics market as it introduces new collectors. But that doesn't mean I have to like it. Why can't they apply a little more style to their designs? This joins the Brexit and Diversity issues for the worst designs yet.

My 10 years old grandson is an avid collector and he hates the cartoon character coins. He much prefers the scientific issues such as Newton and Franklin they are in my opinion far more appealing to children with their inquisitive minds.
I can only echo what paddy posted about the diversity and brew it coins they are disgraceful.

Mr. Men was mentioned in a podcast yesterday and not in a positive way so Earle may have been on to something. (No mention of the coins, it was an non-numismatic reference.) Funny that Mr. Men came up twice this week and I have not thought about it in decades.

I never heard of it before this. Quote: My 10 years old grandson is an avid collector and he hates the cartoon character coins. He much prefers the scientific issues such as Newton and Franklin they are in my opinion far more appealing to children with their inquisitive minds.
When I was a kid, the "magic" of coins was how they were (in my eyes at the time) perfectly formed, impossible to make myself, sculpted pieces of metal with intricate details on them. I was fascinated by this. Usually the more intricate the design, the more I liked them. The WLH REV and Canadian 50¢ REV always were very appealing to me for this reason.
