This is just caused by Die Deterioration. A die crack will appear as a fine, usually pronounced line.
Coop probably has pictures that explain it better than I ever could.

The only think on these that thinking how this is done, is that outside of edge of the die must be developing a ring on that area of die. Thus that area is incuse on the coins near the rim. That is the only that comes to mind right now.
