I have just received my latest purchase. Got it off ebay for next to nothing. However now I begin to question my purchase. I have checked out the number and looked at the label and all seems legit. But on a NGC coin the -*** numbers is that the number it was received in? so a -001 would be the very 1st coin they graded? Anyone have any insight? I attached a photo so maybe someone could help me out since I am new to the graded coin thing.

As an aside, I'm not seeing a grade, just the notation "2008 D $1 BRILLIANT UNC" Not the usual MS64, or 65, or 66, or...

This coin is not graded at all. Just part of a bulk submission. A grader never look at this coin

The number after the dash is the number graded from the coins submitted as a group (single submittal). The grade on this is not of real value, NGC will grade coins with this designation upon the submitter asking for it if it meets a minimum grade. It's an economy submittal and, in my opinion, adds no value above a raw coin. Hope you didn't pay much more than face value.

I think that some of the various TV coin shows on HSN or Coin Vault would partner with the grading company and sell these "First Day Issue" coins through that channel - i,e., folks this is a first day issue coin - and certified as such by one of the finest professional coin grading companies, NGC. Order 10 or more and we will include a cherry finish presentation box.
It's kind of interesting overall and at a next to nothing price, I think it's kinda neat.

I'm sure the TV hucksters will be sure to say "sold out at the mint!". And let's not forget some sidekick saying "WOW!". Sorry, OP, but I hope you have at least learned something from your post. If paid more than $3, I would return it if I was the OP.

This item likely cost the seller more than $3 to ship, and it would cost the same to return. Unless the listing was misleading or erroneous, it wouldn't be fair to the seller to return it because of buyer's regret. Just chalk it up to a learning experience.

See jimbucks comment above regarding your question. This piece is worth a few bucks tops.

Total including shipping I was at $5. I'll toss it into a box that someday someone will open after I am fertilizing some grass somewhere and maybe then they can recoup my investment.
