1971 P And 1972 D Kennedy Halves - Coin Community Forum

STKRollHunter New Member United States 49 Posts	Posted 03/06/2021 12:44 pm Looking at two Kennedy halves that are very distinct from the thousands I have searched through. They are dark in color, to begin with. Furthermore, they have a different sound than both silver and clad when ping tested. Finally, they weigh much less than a clad or silver coin at 10.94g (1972) and 10.85g (1971). is there something different at all here? Report this Post to the Staff

Rothery Pillar of the Community 2145 Posts	Posted 03/06/2021 4:19 pm Looks to have had some corrosive acid applied to the surfaces. And the loss of material because of the acid would account for the lighter weight and different sound in your "ping" test. Report this Post to the Staff
halfamind Pillar of the Community United States 1484 Posts	Posted 03/06/2021 4:20 pm Looks like environmental damage to me; they both may have spent some time in the ground? That could account for the loss of cupro-nickel mass (should be 11.34g for the clad halves), not to mention enough of a chemical composition change (e.g. oxidation) to change the "ring tone."
