I'm not sure whats going on with this nickle but any help would be appreciated. On the obverse there is a shiny copper patch on the face and on the reverse it hss a 2 toned appearance...

Yes likely buried in soil for a period of time. I don't have a specific explanation for the copper-colored patch, but that could be environmental exposure as well I suppose.

I don't know what exactly, but the only logical explanation is environmental damage/discoloration.

Note the areas that are normal colored? This is where the coating on the coin was rubbed off. If this were a Copper issue, the copper color would not rub off. More just a spender, than to waste much time on these.
