I want to work on the liberty seated and Trade dollars.

Looking through ebay I see this one for sale. This is not a real coin is it? I think its fake.
A 1877-S Liberty Seated dollar.
This forum does not even list Seated dollars for this date. - I am reading that correctly aren't I?
that year fall into the Trade dollar coins...

look at this on the Bay: ebay item number:265090440003

It is a more common date Trade dollar and not a Seated dollar. Looks legit to me but probably cleaned and would be graded "Details" in my opinion. Price is not bad at this opening bid but . . . Shoot higher, is my advice. You'll want to be real proud of your Trade dollar someday.

It's just described incorrectly in the listing, but it's a Trade dollar.

ok thanks folks!! much appreciated.

EDIT:
I wasn't even looking for a Trade dollar yet. I don't know a lot about the ancient or colonial coins. I guess I'm about to get an education..

You're not alone. I got stuck on the listing head line and didn't take the time to look at the reverse of the coin. I just knew something was wrong but couldn't place it. Something I have to get used to now.

When I completed my 7070 I purchased nice looking TPG certified coins that were certified genuine but cleaned. I knew that they were genuine and had good eye appeal. Just a thought.

On these older coins...set a budget for each type and then take your time in finding the right one...may take some time but in the years ahead, you'll be much happier with them. Best of luck towards some great examples

Thanks Greasy Fingers. I'll try to do just that. I'm thinking this one might (might) take a bit longer than 2 weeks..
right now, I'm at just shy of half way filled though (31 of 76). Not counting Gold - yet.

The coin appears to be genuine. The 1877 S has a type 2 obverse and reverse. The hand that holds the branch should show 4 fingers. It appears the little finger may of took a hit and is not visible. The Trade dollar is one of the most counterfeited coins on the market. Pass and buy one in a TPG holder and crack it out. I agree the coin may have been cleaned.

On your search for the Seated dollar find one original with eye appeal. It will make your search difficult, but when you find them you will have a nice collectable item.

There are a lot of counterfeit Trade and Seated dollars out there, so I would either buy something certified and crack it out of the slab or make sure you are buying something from a trusted source. I have sometimes done what jimbucks suggests and bought a coin marked as cleaned but with good eye appeal or re-toned.
