What would you grade this coin as? What would you value this? Worth getting graded through PCGS?

Environmental damage. Probably VF 30 Details, guessing maybe value of $18 to $23.
I would not get it graded.

It would cost more to get it graded than what the coin
is worth so you would lose money.

I'd say VF details from the patches of corrosion.

This looks like Newcomb-4. Nice RPD imo.

Welcome to CCF! Sometimes people new to the forum can get the wind taken from their sails so to speak by getting negative feedback about a coin you think is special. That's ok. We all have been there. I know I was. Here is how I see the coin and why:

She is a nice coin. Remember, the CCF is full of finicky collectors (including me) who will see eye appeal and technical grade combined. This coins color isn't optimal. The stain on the obverse and reverse is distracting. Small rim bumps and some distracting hits in focal areas. Grainy surfaces indicative if corrosion. All of these things and more are what advanced collectors notice. So, if you were to market this coin, even if it was deemed as a problem free coin, it would likely not fetch a retail price. After all, this is a very common date which will be competing with many "problem free" examples.

First,

I agree with the VF Details grade estimate.

Grade aside, take some time to ponder what you are holding in your hand. You hold a coin that witnessed almost 3/4 of our history as a nation. In 1851, it had the same purchasing power as about 35 cents today. What has your coin bought in its life in circulation? Where has it traveled? Who was the first person to handle it fresh from the mint? You hold history itself in your hand. The grade is only part of the story. Enjoy that coin!
