Hello Coin Community!

I have another possible error coin that I'm looking for some help with...
This is a 1971 D with what appears to be some Doubling on the reverse although it also appears to maybe just be some unique wear? I'm not quite sure...

I do have a book that notes there are some variations of a 1971D with doubling. Although the Philadelphia mint of the same year with doubling seems to be more sought after, and fetches a much higher price.

Either way, I don't find a lot of error coins so this would be a good find if it is one! Let me know what you all think!

Best Regards,
Casey

@awe, that is an above-average example of shelf-like Machine Doubling. No premium, but you might consider keeping it as an exemplar.

Yes, strong example of Machine Doubling. Keep it for future reference purposes.

They key to finding errors 'in the wild' is knowing what to look for (what is an error and what isn't) and looking through a large volume of coins. The first factor comes with experience and learning. The second comes with actively searching through many, many coins over time--volume is important. I've been looking for decades and I'm still learning, and only occasionally finding a true error.

Thanks for the information! It sounds like I should really be looking for distinct doubled lines, rather than a shelf like appearance, correct? I'll have to do a lot more reading up on Machine Doubling vs Double Die so I can tell the difference myself.

It appears that I am not alone and lots of people mistake these for double die coins huh?. Some of these I see being labeled "double die" and sold at high premiums online...glad I didn't make that mistake! ha...

Thanks again everyone!

1. This is not an error coin.
2. More of a striking issue with as mentioned is showing Machine Doubling right after the strike. The larger coins shows this on the reverse sides of the coins the most often times.
3. Note the date and motto area of the obverse. It is showing die flattening on these devices from years and years of vending machines it has been used in. (That flattens the devices around the outer rim areas)
4. The mintmark is show a partial broken post. The mintmark has a dip , rather than the full inside of the mintmark bottom area.
The rest of the coin showing coin wear. So not a premium coin, just a spender.
