Hi every-one,

Does any-one have any theories relating to the removal of the Double Bars on the CoA 50 cent coin?

Macca's book suggests the bars were removed due to faults occurring - but from my research, many other mintages of 50 cent coins (made for circulation) have a proportion with the bars, I have even seen them in the 2007 mintage !

Toodle-loo.

Crace.., check out ebay item 270321049851.

In the background you'll see the Emu's head with an arrow pointing to the 'double bars'. They were meant to be an integral part of the design, but some faults were detected & the bars were removed from the dies, but not before quite a few coins escaped with them intact. Known years are 1966, 1979, 1980.

They are also detectable on many other years, but they're a lot fainter. I think I've got faint examples on 2004 & 2006, but there's other years as well.

I understand that the double bars are actually a continuation of the tail feather.

Nancy is correct. They mainly occur in 1966 , 1979 and 1980. I have a couple of other years too.

Just a quick note on the other coins that have double bars beside 66, 79 and 80. I have seen them on 83 and 96 as well. Are there any other years that we should look out for?

I have a couple of 1996 with faint double bars. Because they are faint, I think you would only see them on a coin in good condition.
In the late 80s I was pretty sure I found one on a 1978, but I have not seen it for years.

Here is an image of a 1996 50 cent double bar. It is very faint. I have a few 1983 double bars but hey are also very faint. I checked some 1978 for double bars and in the right light I can make out possibly 1 bar but also very faint.

It's probably been asked before but I thought the mint fixed the die error when the "error" was noticed in the 1979 and 80 coins. So why does it still come up in a 96 and later coins?

It is very unusual for the mint to make slip ups like this.......

Good point enworb, I suppose the fact we have so may error coins and a forum set specifically to discuss these errors suggests that quality control is not one of the mint's strong points.

On the topic of the 50 Cent double bars, I have them for the following years: 66, 69, 74, 75, 76, 79, 80, 83 and 93. I would expect to eventually have one for every year to 93. Don't know if they continue after that.

On the subject of the 50 cent double bars I can now add the years 2006 and 2013 to the list of years in which they are found.

Although the double bars are not as prominent as those for 1979 and 1980 they still stand out clearly enough to be seen without difficulty.

Interesting - I stopped paying attention but they keep cropping up.
Interestingly they appear quite obviously in some of the images that the mint have in their promotional materials but not on the actual coins themselves.
