I was of the understanding that there was small date 1970d penny

The only small date is on the 1970 S Lincoln Cent the Philly version and Denver version are large date.

70-S only is has a small date variety.

Well it still works, but the image is altered to make it more confusing. Just the small date were on the 'S' mint that year. To assume it could happen is faulty.

Note the inner curl on the '9'? (RDV-026) These are all the small dates, with the curl. All the 'D' and plain are the RDV-025.
