Agree with others. In AU, you would definitely see luster. Surfaces are impaired.

Hard to say how and why, but this coin has that dead look to it. No luster, not original surfaces, over dipped? polished? cleaned? Hard to tell from the photos.

AU details for sure. Not a "wanted" VAM to pay extra for either, no spaghetti feathers, or dragon scales, no long arrow nock, so pass or return it (if just bought) would be my suggestion, unless it was bought at silver bullion pricing.

To throw the same opinion in the ring: AU - Details

Looks polished to me, a flat shine across the whole coin, no character to it like proper mint luster

I'm curious about the value of this coin. Any opinions?

Also, I haven't noticed a "coin grading/valuing" section on the forum. Am I just missing it?

First let me say that I agree with all the other comments, AU, details, cleaned, possibly polished.

But about your question. Prices change. Right now lower end Morgan and Peace dollars have been rising in price, but as to a cleaned coin, it all depends on what a buyer is willing to Pay. A rule of thumb is that a cleaned coin will bring $20% to 50% of the retail value of a trouble free coin. That is generally true of graded coins but raw ungraded common Morgan and Peace dollars not so much. I've seen buyers paying full price lately cleaned or not. Perhaps it's because we're only talking $30 to $60 for commons vs hundreds or more for better graded MS coins.

Try looking up values here ...... https://www.PCGS.com/prices/detail/...des-25-60/ms

Then go to ebay and look for recent sold prices for raw 1878 S Cleaned Morgans and you should get a pretty good idea as to what your coin might be worth.
