Would appreciate your thoughts on the grade of the 1853 half Eagle. Nice peripheral dark tone. Thanks! Edited by GERMANICVS 05/23/2021 08:18 am

The details look strong enough for AU-53/55...but I'm afraid the 2 hit on the obverse may knock her down. Looks like a LDS with the connecting die crack on the 1st 4 stars. AU50 smat

Not much luster, but it might make AU-50.

Maybe it's the pics, but looks like it may have been a sea salvaged coin. XF-45.

I was torn between EF45 and AU53 on this one, I'm calling AU53 due to the crusty original surfaces. There is little price difference from EF40 through AU55, it's more about finding the right coin, this one hasn't been messed with either, the only thing distracting is the double hit in the field in front of Miss Liberty. Not often you find an old gold coin with original crusty surfaces, so many have been played to death in effort to "improve" them. That's a big plus for me.

my first thought was AU53 so I'm going with that but GERMANICVS is known for throwing curve balls so it could be MS66

AU50 for me, but I'm bad with gold.

Quote: GERMANICVS is known for throwing curve balls so it could be MS66 I don't recall Germanicvs posting slabbed coins before, though I could be wrong. If this is a MS66 I'd eat my shorts to quote "Bart Simpson" I doubt the TPGs are that lenient.

AU50 (ish) but cleaned at some point.

AU-50 seems about right with current grading standards. 20 years ago it would have been XF-40.... Any cleaning seems like it meets "market acceptable" requirements. The die cracks add eye appeal IMO. Nice looking no-motto half eagle!

No luster, dents in front of Lib's face, some of the rim denticles starting to fuse, obvious wear on the high points. I agree with the 45 opinions.
Would be a nice coin to have in my collection, anyway.

Strong AU reverse but 45 obverse. I feel details might be in order due to the obverse hits.
